Digging up the past…

Posted: July 19, 2009 in Uncategorized

I’m on a one-week vacation in Germany – normally, I had planned to take the Filthy Pumpkin 2 sources with me to do some cutting and post pro, but due to a massive data manegement fail on my side, I didn’t take all of the material with me, resulting in utter chaos on the mobile hard drive. So I better don’t touch this freaky stuff.

A few days ago though, Michael and I were talking about a game adaption for the Filthy Pumpkin stuff once again – and this wasn’t the only time we were talking about this. Usually, we pretty quickly came to realize that it would be too much of an effort and too complicated to finish – but not necessarily this time. I got the idea to use the classic DOOM Engine (which is now freeware), to piece together a little mindless ego shooter thingy within the Filthy Pumpkin Universe – and I am working on a proof of concept prototype right now.

Suffice to say that it’s really really really WEIRD to get into old technology like this. I am using a ton of emulators just to get the tools running again. Data Management will be handled by the GFE file browser (for browsing the IWads). WinDEU will be my mapdesign tool – and I’m using DEHacked 3 to manipulate the game data. Oh and of course, the classic idTech1 Engine is useless in times of Vista, so I am using ZDoom instead. So far my primary goal for today is figure out what the hell I was doing back in 1996 when I basically started to get the hang of mapdesign – and replace my head with the Doom-guy’s head – just to get things going of course.
